The staghorn cholla gets its common name from its antler-like branches and its scientific species name from the great variability of its flower color: red, brown, orange and yellow. The green fruits are tinged with shades of red to purple. A plant of the Sonoran Desert, it occurs in south-central Arizona and northern Mexico.
